“It’s a simple problem”

Ok - first of all that’s an Oxy Moron.  If it’s so simple, why in same hell is it a problem?  You guys all know what I do for a living.  I’m not complaining.  If it weren’t for all the computer illiterate people in the world I would be out of a job so problems (no matter how simple or difficult) are good for me, bad for my clients.

This is how the equation works

1) Client has problem with computer
2) Client calls me with a problem and attempts to get “free” help over the phone
3) I explain (and not in these exact words) that I am not free tech support
4) Client proceeds to tell me how long it is going to take to fix the problem and how “simple” the problem is yet they cannot figure out how to solve it

I’m no genius but if I have a problem that I don’t know how to solve I am going to call someone who “specializes” in that field to solve said problem for me.  Who am I to tell them how long it is going to take to solve the problem?

Where do people get off telling me how long it’s going to take to solve the problem that they are not smart enough to solve.  If you’re such a wizard fix it yourself Einstein.

The bottom line is money.  Some people do not want to pay for services.  I mean are you going to ask the lawn guy to mow your freakin’ yard over the phone?  Ask your hair stylist to cut your hair over the phone?  Hell no.  You have two choices:

1) Stop breaking your stuff
2) Pay for services as needed and don’t try to circumvent the system by calling and saying “I don’t know but you may be able to ‘walk me through this over the phone’
